Britannia Anchor Removals praises the work of the Office of Fair Trading
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has continued to support raising standards within the removals industry. Britannia Anchor Removals Managing Director, Chris Smallwood, has made it clear that the Consumer Code of Practice by which his company abides and is promoted and monitored by the OFT has proven to be very popular amongst the clients of his company. One client recently changed her mind when choosing whose services to use for her removal to Southampton. Upon learning that Britannia Anchor offered a pre-payments bond (underpinned by the British Association of Removers – BAR) and terms and conditions that had been agreed with the OFT, she decided to use his OFT recognized company.
Mr Smallwood stated recently ?Clients need to be aware, that when they are using a removal company, then they are entrusting all their valuable worldly possessions into the hands of complete strangers, with this in mind you must be sure that you are fully protected against the rogue traders that we all know exist out there.? Praising the OFT he continued ? The OFT Consumer Code of Practice is adhered to by all members of the British Association of Removers, it provides not only the pre-payments bond, but minimum requirements for insurance coverage whilst your goods are in the possession of the removals company. I think customers must also be made aware that if they sign a contract with a removals company and they fail to turn up on the agreed date, the client is entitled (under the code) to their money back plus half again!?
Mr Smallwood was also keen to point out the perils of paying cash on the day or choosing a remover without any formal contract. ? The risks are immense, in cases where there is no signed contract, there is no obligation for the Remover to turn up and in most cases there is no insurance! When you pay cash, it can often be the case that the contractor has not put you through his books and as such you have no insurance and in fact no rights at all, you may need to consider your own position from a tax and legal point of view?
