Anchor Removals Employers of the year – Runners up

Ethical employer Anchor Removals leads the way

Britannia Anchor Removals in Salford was runner up in the Best Employer category at the 2017 Salford Business Awards.

The accolade recognises Anchor’s trailblazing commitment to social responsibility and its accreditation as a Living Wage Employer, paying employees a real living wage of £8.45.

The removals industry is renowned for its hard physical work, unpredictable hours and generally poor treatment of employees. Anchor has no staff on zero hour contracts. All employees enjoy full-time, 40-hour contracts and are paid through a proper PAYE tax system rather than by cash. Staff are also engaged in company decisions through regular meetings across the organisation.

The innovative approach has been applauded by the company’s customers and helped Anchor Removals outperform the market. “The customers love it,” says Sales Manager Martin Edmondson. “They are big supporters of the Living Wage, and it is a massive positive for them that we only use full-time employees. We have gone from strength to strength. It is a fantastic selling point for us. I am convinced that we are converting quotes into jobs as a result.”

Benefits of being a Living Wage employer

“The truth is that well paid, well looked after staff means totally engaged and committed employees, leading to the delivery of high quality work,” says company Director Chris Smallwood, who is one of the industry’s leading advocates for corporate social responsibility.

Martin, who originally trained as a general porter and moved on to becoming a surveyor then export consultant before he joined Anchor Removals, says the Living Wage has also helped create a real sense of dedication and engagement with the job. “I’ve worked in the industry for near on twenty years, and I can say that this is one of the best teams I have worked in,” he says. “We have regular meetings and Chris encourages us to see how we can turn any concern or negative feeling into a positive by the end of the meeting. We have become a close-knit unit, with a lot of passion for what we do.”

Britannia Anchor clearly has ambitions to lead the way to a more responsible and sustainable industry; the company works with a number of local and national charities and with local sporting institutions, and has built strong ties with the Salford community. “Our commitment to social responsibility is a big part of who we are as a company and is also helping us grow our business,” Chris says. “It is an honour for this to be recognised in the Salford Business Awards.”

Four questions to ask on your next removal #movingwithaheart

As an employer of 13 staff we are proud that all our company colleagues earn at least £7.50 per hour, way above the minimum wage the Chancellor of the Exchequer has set for next year. We are bringing in pensions for our employees 1 year before we are compelled to do so and we aspire to set in a health plan for our employees that will help them be healthier for longer. Our teams are invited to contribute ideas to our business to find better way of working and smarter ways of working. Why do we do this? Because like the voting public, we want to help people become less dependent on government support and have the benefit of a sense of belonging and pride in having a job that they feel valued and wanted in! How can you help? When you are moving house ask these 4 simple questions of your potential moving firm?

1. Do you pay above the minimum wage?
2. Do your employees have full time contracts that are NOT zero hours?
3. Do you pay through a proper PAYE tax system? (not cash in hand)
4. Do you pay hourly rate, meaning your employee gets paid for what they work rather a than a fixed rate that could fall under the minimum wage?

Help us to deliver a better world for our employees and help them feel valued in the work that they do ‪#‎movingwithaheart

BAR leading the way in customer experience

BAR starts the year as the only trade association in the country that has established the three core initiatives necessary to demonstrate the industry’s commitment to business compliance, high service standards and customer protection

As of January, BAR has in place a Trading Standards Institute approved Code of Practice; assured advice under the Primary Authority arrangement with Trading Standards (see page 28 for more details); and an independent Alternative Dispute Resolution scheme.

This three-pronged approach reflects BAR’s efforts to help its Members ensure the very highest quality customer experience, in what is an extremely competitive marketplace for removals and storage.
The three-way arrangements provide Members with best practice Terms & Conditions and Quotations, which have been approved as part of the new Primary Authority arrangement with Trading Standards. They also guarantee customers a premium quality of service under the Code of Practice, and give access to independent dispute resolution in the event of any problem.

Recognition
Reacting to the news, Rt Hon Baroness Crawley of Edgbaston, Life Peer, President of Trading Standards
Institute and Chairman of the TSI Consumer Codes Approval Scheme, told R&S: “BAR’s commitment
through membership of the Consumer Codes Approval Scheme and now signing up to a Primary
Authority relationship to ensure they do right by their customers is an example to consumers that when
business does care, it can take the right actions.

Actions that ensure they understand consumer rights, and put in place mechanisms such as their
Alternative Dispute Resolution to protect customers’ interests. Consumers can be at their most vulnerable
when moving home or business; literally waving off the family valuables, placing them in trust with a
BAR member, and this should be seen as a huge sign that their confidence is not misplaced.”
Altogether, these developments show how BAR is leading the way not only in the removals and storage
sector but also in the wider world of professional trade associations.

With economic conditions still challenging, trade associations need to work closely with public sector authorities to ensure the regulatory framework in which their members operate is sufficiently reliable and flexible to allow member
companies to prosper.

Consumer Minister, Jo Swinson, told R&S: “Moving house or relocating your business can be very
stressful, especially when you have treasured items or expensive furniture to transport. That is why I
welcome the news that BAR is going the extra mile to work to higher standards and signing up to the Code
of Practice.”

I am delighted to see BAR lead the way in showing how business compliance and customer protection can be delivered without compromising quality or price.
Baroness Crawley, President of Trading Standards Institute and
Chairman of the TSI Consumer Codes Approval Scheme (CCAS)
This badge of distinction will help customers find removals businesses in their area that they can trust and help those businesses attract more customers as a result.

Employment Relations and
Consumer Affairs

Choosing the right removals company can take the headache and the heartache out of an overseas move

Getting ready for your move

The earlier you get us involved the better in choosing the right removals company.   Moving abroad can throw up unexpected problems and talking to an expert early on can avoid trouble later. For example, some things in your home might not be permitted in the country you’re moving to; your mover will know the rules and will help you decide what to take and what to leave behind.

Timing is very important and here at Anchor removals we will do everything possible to make sure your things arrive when you want them. We will discuss with you the best and most economic method of shipment – sea, air, road, or perhaps a combination of all three.

We will then tell you how much it will all cost and give you an estimate of the expected time of arrival at your new home. If there are any particular difficulties or common delays at your destination country, we will tell you and take all possible steps to keep them to a minimum.

Getting the packing right

When you are moving to another continent, your possessions will probably be packed in a shipping container for the voyage and the cost of your move will be calculated on the amount of space you use. Making the best use of that space and making sure your possessions are properly protected is a highly skilled task and we have the expertise and the specialist materials needed to do a professional job. In addition, all our staff are trained to meet industry standards … giving you total peace of mind.

A poorly-packed container wastes money and can increase the chances of damage to precious possessions during a long sea voyage. When you’ve decided what to take, and what to leave behind, Anchor Removals will arrange to carefully export pack your belongings ready for international shipping. All packed cartons and packages are fully documented and listed.
If you use the whole container the shipment will probably be loaded at your house and taken straight to the ship. Smaller shipments go back to the warehouse for loading as a ‘part load’.

You don’t have to use a whole container, as most overseas shipments run very efficient ‘part-load’ services to popular destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the USA. You only pay for the space you use.

Airfreight

It’s sometimes a good idea to send a few things by air to arrive ahead of the sea shipment. It’s expensive and based on the weight as well as the volume, but some items, such as equipment for work, baby clothes or sports equipment, might be best sent by air if you don’t want to be without them for long. But remember to speak to us and plan, even by air it can take possessions several days to reach their destination so don’t send anything by air that you’ll need immediately on arrival.

If you want to send an air consignment Anchor Removals will handle all the packing and make the arrangements for you. Speak to you soon.

Britannia Anchor Removals of Salford have become the first member of the Bristish Association of Removers to be approved by the Which? Trusted Traders scheme, from consumer champion Which?.

In order to become a Which Trusted trader, Britannia Anchor Removals has successfully passed a visit by a professional Which? Trusted trader assessor, with tradings standards experience, a company credit check, as well as random customer references.

Which?, the largest consumer body in the UK, launched Which? Trusted Traders to help give consumers the confidence to make the right choices when it comes to finding skilled professionals and to enable traders to distinguish themselves from their peers. To learn more go to whichtraders.co.uk

Britannia Anchor Removals as members of the British Association of Removers have a Consumer Code of Practice that is approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) and we are registered members of the Primary Authority Partnership Scheme with BAR and Hertfordshire Trading Standards, with Which? Trusted Traders they are the first company to be recognised by both a government and independent consumer organisation.
Chris Smallwood the Managing Director of Britannia Anchor commented “this is a proud day for us and a landmark moment in our history, we are endorsed by the largest consumer body in the U.K. as well as being recognised by trading standards for our code of practice ” Chris added “anyone who is looking to relocate their household contents can secure our services in the knowledge that we are recognised for the high standards of service we offer. This has been an aspiration that has now become reality and we are absolutely thrilled.”

British Association of Removers CODE OF PRACTICE

For over 100 years the British Association of Removers (BAR) has been the recognised voice of the professional moving and storage industry in the United Kingdom. Currently, it has 470 Members in the UK working out of 652 branch locations. Its Members carry out some 400,000 moves within the UK and worldwide each year.

BAR Members range in size from small family businesses to multinational companies, but involvement in the industry alone does not qualify a company for membership. BAR inspects and investigates all potential Members and matches them against criteria for membership that cover premises, vehicles, staff, operational procedures and insurance arrangements. BAR also has a programme of ongoing inspection during membership to ensure standards are maintained. See more about this

Through this programme and through this TSI Approved Consumer Code of Practice Scheme, BAR constantly seeks to raise standards in the industry so Customers may receive the most efficient and trouble free move possible.

This Code applies to all furniture removal activities for UK consumers dealing with a UK based BAR Member.

BAR and its Members recognise that moving home is a stressful experience and the purpose of this Code is to ensure that Members trade in a fair and reasonable manner. In the event that this does not happen, the Code sets out in-company procedures that should enable complaints to be resolved. If this fails, then BAR as Code Sponsor provides a conciliation service aimed at resolving problems quickly and fairly. Should this fail, a low cost arbitration scheme operated by IDRS Ltd, a subsidiary of The Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) is available.

There is a range of disciplinary processes and sanctions built into the Code including expulsion for persistent or serious failure to comply with the Code.
Only bona fide Members of BAR may legally use the BAR logo on vehicles, signage, websites, letterheads and promotional or packaging material.
Compliance with this Code is mandatory upon BAR Members who are also required to advertise their adherence to this Code.

You may always contact BAR Head Office on 01923 699480 to check that the company is a Member or you can visit the BAR website at www.bar.co.uk
No Code of this kind can lay down detailed rules of behaviour to cover every occasion. The Code’s effectiveness is dependent on the observance of its provisions in the spirit as well as the letter. Compliance with this Code by Members of BAR is a powerful factor in maintaining and raising standards in the professional removal industry.
